UNDERSTANDING TANK WATER HEATER VS TANKLESS WATER HEATER
1. CONVENIENCE

Most people find the primary issue they have with their hot water is not having enough. Hot water many not last long enough for everyone in your family to get a shower, or it may run out partway through a shower This is common with a traditional tank water heater and a tankless heater can solve them. That’s because of how the two kinds of heaters work:
-
Tank heaters pre-heat a limited amount of water in their tank. You can get bigger tanks, but they’re expensive and there’s still a limit. If you use up all the hot water in the tank, you run out until it refills and reheats. This is what makes taking a long shower no fun.
-
Tankless heaters heat up water as it’s needed—whenever you turn the faucet. They can bring water up to steaming, soothing temperatures in a matter of seconds. They can provide hot water indefinitely.
2. EFFICIENCY

One of the biggest things homeowners want out of a new water heater is energy efficiency. This is where there’s the most dramatic difference between the two heaters:

-
Tank heater operates continuously. That means it’s running even when you’re asleep, and much of that hot water will never even be used. That’s a lot of wasted energy—that you pay for.
-
Tankless heater only heats water on demand. It’s a smaller, compact system that flash-heats water when you need it, and turns off as soon as you turn off the faucet. Tankless heaters are designed to save energy.
3. COST

The cost advantages depend on whether you want a quick fix or a long-term investment:

-
Tank heaters cost less up front but are expensive to run and wear out sooner.
-
Tankless heaters cost slightly more up front, but can save you substantially on your monthly bills. Comparing a standard tank heater (50-gallon, electric) with an equivalent tankless (condensed gas-fired unit), the tankless unit can reduce energy costs by 60% or more.
4. INSTALLATION & MAINTENANCE

Installation costs on tankless heaters have come down recently, and many tankless manufacturers offer models that are compatible with the same gas line and ventilation stacks as traditional heaters. That means the two heaters are now much more evenly matched. But after installation, the difference is clear:

-
Tank heaters are old technology due to the bulky storage tank. Most tank style water heaters last only 8-10 years before they have to be replaced, and typically come with just a 6-year warranty.
-
Tankless heaters have a much smaller footprint and is more effective. Tankless water heaters can last up to 15 or more years with proper maintenance, and many come with a 10 - 25 year heat exchange warranty.
BENEFITS OF A TANKLESS WATER HEATER
Energy Savings
Traditional tank water heater heats water continuously, tankless water heaters heat only as much water as needed therefore reducing energy use by 24 to 34% compared to traditional water heater tanks.
Extended Life Span
On average, tankless water heaters last 5-7 years longer than tank water heaters. With proper maintenance, a tankless water heater can offer up to 20 years of lasting use.
Endless Hot Water
Heat Exchange elements in tankless units heat water just when it is needed, for as long as required, offering continuous hot water unlike tank water heaters that deplete hot water quickly
Space Saver
Most traditional tanks hold 40 to 60 gallons of water and measure about 60 inches tall and 22 inches wide. Tankless water heaters take up far less space in your home. Standard tankless size is 28 inches tall by 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
Lower Utility Bill
Tankless water heaters conserve almost 27 - 50% more energy than traditional tank models and simultaneously service every high-demand point in your home, such as the bathroom, kitchen and laundry room.
